Accessory Design Degree

Accessory Design Degree

It is common knowledge that American women, unlike European women, do not know how to accessorize. This is a shame, particularly for those who spend their creative talents making accessories such as hats, scarves, gloves and purses for every day use. Many people with an accessory design degree find themselves pandering to the European market.

While someone necessary does not need a degree to become a successful accessory designer, it is often helpful and will enable you to get your foot in the door of a fashion house that creates such designs. There are many people in the world who feel that they can create their own accessories using materials from the store. They sell their wares at flea markets and online outlets for a fraction of what a proper designer could get.

If you truly are serious about becoming an accessory designer and like working with fabric and designs but do not like the intricacy of designing actual clothing, you may enjoy working as an accessory designer. It is best to have an art degree to be successful in this field. In addition to allowing you to get a job in a fashion house that specializes in accessories, it will also enable you to learn the right and wrong way of creating accessories and how to spot the different trends.

In addition to learning about creating the accessories, if you are serous about becoming an accessory designer, you should take an apprentice job after graduation in a fashion house so you can learn something about the business side of this fashion industry. Here you will learn about marketing tactics and how accessories are sold.

The more knowledge you gain, the better off you are than the average person on the street who is trying to hawk home made scarves at the local flea market. You do not want to sell your goods at the local flea market for pennies when you can sell them in upscale boutiques for dollars, do you? That is why it is so important to learn as much as you can about the ins and outs of the fashion business before embarking on your own venture.

Designing accessories can be fun and creatively rewarding. Imagine being able to gift someone a one of a kind home made purse. Or pass by a boutique and see your scarves and other accessories hanging in the window. Accessories come in many varieties - from belts to bags to hair clips to scarves - accessory trends, like fashion trends, are always changing. It is not only important to be able to come up with creative ideas, but equally important to be able to keep up with the current trends. We do not see people selling snoods any longer, do we? This is because that is one accessory of the past.

You do not need to get a four year Accessory Design degree. If you are serious about starting your own business, you can opt for a two year degree. A person who wants to make their living designing accessories should have much creativity, a flair for fashion, good marketing skills and good sales skills as it will most likely be necessary to try to sell your items to owners of small boutiques.

The good part about being an accessory designer is that you do not have to have the vast knowledge of a fashion designer and boutiques are usually more than willing to take your quality accessories for sale on consignment basis. It can be a fun and rewarding career for someone with a lot of creative talent and boundless energy.
